Health insurance premiums 2027: what is already certain
The 2027 premiums have not been published yet.
Premiums for basic insurance only apply once the Federal Office of Public Health has approved them — which happens at the end of September 2026. Until then there are forecasts, but no figure you can rely on. As soon as the official premiums are out, they will be on this page.
There are 75 days left until 30 November. By that date a cancellation must have reached your current insurer — receipt counts, not the postmark.
How it unfolds, step by step
- end of September 2026 The Federal Office of Public Health approves the 2027 premiums and publishes them. Before that no insurer may present a 2027 premium as valid.
- by end of October 2026 Your insurer must notify you of the new premium — under Art. 7 para. 2 KVG at least two months in advance, and must explicitly point out your right to change insurer.
- by 30 November 2026 If you want to switch, the cancellation must have ARRIVED at your current insurer by this day. A date written on the letter is not enough.
- 1 January 2027 The new premium, and any new insurer, take effect. Without a cancellation the existing contract simply continues at the new premium.
Basis: Health Insurance Act (KVG) Art. 7 and the publication practice of the Federal Office of Public Health.
What actually happened in recent years
Not a forecast, but calculated from the official premiums 2021–2026: the lowest, the average and the highest premium in Switzerland — each for the same reference person, so the years stay comparable.
| Year | lowest | average | change | highest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | CHF 333.00 | CHF 480.47 | — | CHF 970.20 |
| 2022 | CHF 328.10 | CHF 480.30 | 0.0% | CHF 1'047.80 |
| 2023 | CHF 339.00 | CHF 501.47 | +4.4% | CHF 1'047.80 |
| 2024 | CHF 365.00 | CHF 537.46 | +7.2% | CHF 943.00 |
| 2025 | CHF 394.10 | CHF 565.47 | +5.2% | CHF 961.90 |
| 2026 | CHF 385.80 | CHF 583.29 | +3.2% | CHF 913.80 |
Reference person: an adult, deductible CHF 300, standard model with free choice of doctor, with accident cover. The average is unweighted — it counts every offer equally and is therefore not identical to the FOPH “mean premium”, which is weighted by number of insured. The enclaves of Büsingen and Campione are excluded.
Your canton: the cheapest premium in 2021 and 2026
Switching to the cheapest insurer is worth little if that same insurer raises its price sharply every year. This table shows how much the lowest available premium in each canton has risen — the differences between cantons are considerable.

What others expect for 2027
We do not make a forecast of our own. These figures come from third parties and are listed with source and date — none of them is binding.
comparis.ch AG
In its press release of 12 May 2026 expects basic insurance premiums to rise by an average of 3.7 per cent for 2027.
Federal Office of Public Health
At a media briefing in Bern on 26 May 2026 said it expects an increase of 4.5 to 5 per cent, based on healthcare costs having risen 5.2 per cent in 2025.
What that is worth
Both figures are estimates and they contradict each other. Only what the FOPH approves at the end of September becomes binding — and an average says nothing about your municipality anyway: canton, premium region, age, deductible and model are what decide.

Frequently asked questions
When are the 2027 health insurance premiums published?
At the end of September 2026. Premiums for basic insurance must be approved by the Federal Office of Public Health before they apply; the FOPH announces them for the following year each September. Your own insurer must then notify you at least two months before they take effect — in practice by the end of October.
By how much will premiums rise in 2027?
Before the FOPH approval nobody knows. There are estimates: comparis.ch expects 3.7 per cent, the FOPH 4.5 to 5 per cent — both from May 2026, and they contradict each other. Measured instead of estimated: the average premium for our reference person rose by 21,4 per cent between 2021 and 2026.
Should I wait with the comparison until the figures are out?
No. The gap between the cheapest and the most expensive insurer is large every year and stays large — if you know today where you stand, all that is left in November is to act. Between publication at the end of September and the 30 November deadline there are only about nine weeks, and that is exactly when insurers and advisers are busiest.
Do I get a special right of cancellation if my premium rises?
Art. 7 para. 2 KVG gives you, upon notification of the new premium, one month's notice to the end of the month preceding its validity. Since the new premium applies from 1 January, this comes down to the same date as the ordinary change: the cancellation must be with the insurer by 30 November.
Does the national average apply to me as well?
Only by coincidence. Premiums apply per canton and premium region, and depending on age, deductible and model the change turns out quite differently. The table by canton on this page shows how far apart the cantons are; your actual figure appears in the comparison for your municipality.
